Your OG image deserves better

The Open Graph (OG) image is more than just a technical requirement for your website.

It's a billboard for your brand, it's a marketing asset, and it deserves better.

How to test your OG images

My favourite tool to test OG images is metatags.io because it's a very simple tool, it's free and it does the job perfectly.

You copy paste your url in the tool and it shows how it will look when sharing on:

  • Google
  • X (Twitter)
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest
  • Slack

The tool reads out the metatag properties of your website. So if you don't see anything the metatags are not setup properly and you should fix this because it also affects the SEO of your website.

Why your OG image matters

When someone shares a link of your website on social media or in a messaging app the OG image is the first impression.

So your OG image should be treated as a marketing asset, it will:

  • Capture attention
  • Reinforce your branding
  • Communicate context
  • Spark curiosity

Often when visiting a website I'm curious about their OG images. This probably isn't normal behaviour but it is the reason for this insight. A lot of businesses don't treat their OG image as a marketing asset. Please do so.
